Opened in June of 2022, The James Theater was created with the vision of creating a community space, versatile enough to welcome music, dance, musical and theater productions, parties, recitals, seminars, workshops, and art installations.

The space offers 121 permanent raised blue velvet seats, perfect for performances of any kind, as well as different showings and gatherings. These seats also retract into the wall to allow for a wider floor space, great for standing events, or our favorite, dance parties, up to a capacity just under 250.

Going forward, the James Theater looks to be a venue that cultivates the small arts and community interaction within Iowa City and beyond. Art in any form is art, and the James Theater aims to provide a space that allows growing and emerging artists to practice their craft, while allowing Iowa City the opportunity to observe and be a part of this creative process.
